Como un orgulloso mexicano y representante de mi herencia, no puedo permanecer en silencio mientras se sigan utilizando estereotipos dañinos y chistes racistas para risas baratas y aplausos divisivos. Comentarios que comparan a Puerto Rico con “basura flotante” no solo son ofensivos, sino que borran la rica cultura, la fortaleza y las contribuciones de las comunidades puertorriqueñas, así como la larga historia de resiliencia y sacrificio que a menudo se ignora. Estas declaraciones no son meramente “chistes”, son parte de un patrón de retórica dañina que se ha normalizado en los espacios políticos. Desestiman las luchas y la humanidad de innumerables comunidades, alimentando narrativas divisivas.

Me posiciono firmemente con aquellos que están alzando la voz para exigir respeto, no ridículo, por nuestra herencia y por todos los que han sido objeto de tales comentarios despectivos.

As a proud Mexican-American and representative of my heritage, I cannot remain silent while harmful stereotypes and racist jokes continue to be used for cheap laughs and divisive applause. Comments that compare Puerto Rico to “floating garbage” are not only offensive—they erase the rich culture, strength, and contributions of Puerto Rican communities, as well as the long history of resilience and sacrifice that is too often ignored.

These statements aren’t merely “jokes”; they are part of a pattern of harmful rhetoric that has been normalized in political spaces. They disregard the struggles and humanity of countless communities, fueling divisive narratives.

I stand firmly with those who are speaking out to demand respect, not ridicule, for our heritage and for all who have been on the receiving end of such demeaning remarks.
